Radiographic Film Review & Processing Program

Overview 

The purpose of this session is to provide operating company personnel with an understanding of Radiographic Film Review and Processing activities.  We will outline inspection and evaluation techniques, and the interpretation of acceptance criteria from various codes and standards relative to the non-nuclear "power" industry.  In general, the session will provide a better understanding of the steps taken to determine:

• Quality of Radiographs
• Analyze Discontinuities and Anomalies
• Correlate Information on Reports
• Determine if a Discontinuity is a Defect
• Examine Different Types of Defects

Other specific items to be reviewed include the following: 

Review actual welds and related x-ray film:

• A.     Elements of Interpretation
• B.     Analyzing the Image

1. Determining the quality of radiography density
2. Determining the quality of a radiograph penetration
3. Determining the quality of a radiograph coverage
4. Discontinuity decisions
5. Weld discontinuity types
6. Acceptance/rejection criteria

Radiographic Examination Reports:

• A.     Review a radiograph
• B.     Write a sample report
• C.     Importance of listing all applicable information on reports and radiographs

Image Quality Indicators (Penetrameters):

• A.     Review the different types of penetrameters and their use
• B.     Review the use of "T" holes regarding penetrameters and sensitivity
• C.     Review of thickness of penetrameters as related to the specimen thickness

Terms and Definitions:

• A.     Review the various terms and definitions used in radiography

Procedures:

• A.     Review appropriate procedures for radiographic operations

• A.     Review completed x-ray film, discussing the different types of indications
• B.     Understand the difference between discontinuities and defects
